The FDA has approved a treatment for the erectile dysfunction of men with type 2 diabetes, known as type 2 diabetes mellitus, and also has approved it for those who don’t meet the criteria for having diabetes, a new study has found.
Researchers from the University of Michigan found that the use of a diabetes medication, sildenafil (sold under the brand name Viagra), significantly increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by nearly 40%, even when patients didn’t have diabetes at the time of the medication’s use. The study is the first to provide this information on how patients treated with sildenafil were able to stop taking their diabetes medication without the risks associated with not having diabetes at the time.
“It’s a big issue, but we think this information is useful for doctors and researchers who are looking at this more thorough analysis of the connection between diabetes and the use of diabetes medications,” said lead author, associate professor of medicine and urology at the University of Michigan.

The research also found that the use of sildenafil increased the risk of having diabetes by 50%, even when patients didn’t have diabetes at the time of the medication’s use. This finding was particularly interesting because patients who had diabetes were more likely to have a heart condition and were treated with drugs that could lower blood sugar levels.
This study is the first to provide this information on how patients treated with sildenafil were able to stop taking their diabetes medication without the risks associated with not having diabetes at the time of the medication’s use.
