At the turn of the last decade, the number of prescriptions forSildenafiltaking part in the GPs’ survey of UK primary care pharmacists was around half that seen in 2016. This represents a significant increase over this time period. The prescription volume, in particular, was significantly impacted by the rising prescription demand. This was particularly true for Sildenafil – the generic version of Viagra – which has been the mainstay of PGA treatment for more than a decade. The prescription trend has been monitored and continues to continue, as other drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction have come onto the market.

The prescription volume is the largest area of study with a significant impact on GP practices. The prescription volume is also a major driver of the increasing prescription demand, as there has been a rise in prescribing for other drugs in this area. This is particularly important in light of the rising cost of medication. The increase in prescription spending has been driven in part by a growing number of private and government health policies.

In 2016, over 300,000 prescriptions were written by the NHS, and nearly one million were filled. This represents a huge increase over this time period, with the number of private and government health policies having increased from just over 5% in 2015 to over 300% in 2018. The NHS spent £54.9 billion on drugs in 2018 alone, increasing from £49.8 billion in 2015. This is an increase of 4.8% from 2015 to 2018.

The prescription volume is also a major contributor to the rising prescription demand, as it has been the only medication to be shown to be effective against ED in the UK for over a decade. The drug was first prescribed in 1998 by Dr Fox. Two years later, Pfizer launched Viagra, which remains one of the most prescribed drugs globally.

The number of prescriptions written by primary care pharmacists has also remained steady over the past 15 years, although the trend has been slow. There is a significant increase in prescriptions written for sildenafil, however, with the number of prescriptions being in the same range as in 2015. Sildenafil has been prescribed for more than two decades, with a prescription volume of over 3 million prescriptions written for this drug, representing an increase of 1.2% compared to 2015. Sildenafil is also being prescribed for ED, which is a condition in which the levels of blood flow to the penis are reduced. Sildenafil has a prescription volume of over 5 million prescriptions, representing an increase of 2.3% compared to 2015. Sildenafil is also prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the lungs.

There is also a significant increase in prescriptions written for tadalafil. Tadalafil is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and is also being prescribed to be taken by adult men to treat erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil is now the most prescribed drug in the UK, representing 1.8% more than the 2015 figure. Tadalafil is also being prescribed for the treatment of ED, and as a result the prescription volume has increased by more than 3% since its approval in 1998.

This prescription growth is largely due to the ageing population and the increasing demand for medications. Prescriptions written for older people are now twice as often written for younger people as they are for older men. In addition, prescription volumes are rising in line with other areas of study, and the increase in prescriptions has also increased the medication’s costs.

The prescription demand is also likely to continue to be a driver for the growth of the PGA, as the NHS spends more on prescription medicines than any other area of care. This is particularly true for medicines that have already been prescribed for sexual dysfunction, such as erectile dysfunction drugs. There has also been a general increase in the number of NHS surgeries and GP surgeries for medicines that are now being prescribed to treat ED.

It is estimated that more than one in five doctors and pharmacists in the UK write prescriptions for medicines to treat sexual dysfunction. This is likely to continue to be an important driver for the growth of the PGA, as the NHS spends a further $1.7 billion a year on prescription medicines, which is expected to increase the number of men who need these treatments.

New York, 29 September 2023

The number of NHS prescriptions written for erectile dysfunction drugs in the UK has increased by more than one-third over the past 15 years. The figure is rising as more people take advantage of the rising prescription drug demand to treat their sexual dysfunction. The figures show an increase of 9.1% and 6.9%, respectively, from 2015 to 2018.

Description

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men to get and keep an erection.

Sildenafil is available in tablet form, as well as as in a liquid form. Sildenafil is also available in oral tablet form, as well as in chewable tablets.

BackgroundThere is a growing interest in understanding the relationship between Erectile Dysfunction and the use of PDE-5 inhibitors in erectile dysfunction (ED). While these inhibitors have been used to treat ED in men, it is not yet known whether they are effective in treating ED in men with other conditions.

ObjectiveTo assess the efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).

MethodsThe efficacy and safety data of sildenafil citrate were collected from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical trials. The primary efficacy endpoint was the change in erectile function from baseline to 12 weeks. Secondary endpoints included the change in the mean erectile function (mean number of erections/week) and the change from baseline to 12 weeks for the treatment of ED.

ResultsThe mean number of erections/week was 4.2 (SD 3.2) for the treatment of ED and 4.6 (SD 2.
